More than fourscore and seven years ago as the American founding fathers bound together their great states, visual ideas and symbolisms had to be agreed upon to properly represent the country as a whole. Bit by bit lawmakers beefed up their pride scale and pass these embellishments into law.

Presently, the national flower of America is the genus Rosa or more commonly known as the Rose.

As most nations developed more cultural icons containing national, state or regional pride came into meaning. Logically, most of these icons are the items that a place or locality is best known for. According to http://www.50states.com/oregon.htm, the state flag of Oregon uses a beaver on its reverse side; Iowa uses a bald eagle and California uses a Grizzly Bear.

Montana uses the pick, shovel and plow, while a Shield is used by New Jersey. Massachusetts uses an American Indian while Alaska uses the color blue to symbolize nature along with their wildflowers. But enough about flags.

What this article discusses are the state flowers or floral emblems that represents the majority of the US states and the official national flower.

The majority of the research material for this article was taken from www.netstate.com/states.

Starting off with the great state of Alabama, that first had the Goldenrod as its state flower in 1927. 30 years later an elite ladies group disagreed with this and made a plea to change it to the Camellia (Camellia japonica) although it is originally from China. They took notice that the Goldenrod was more of a weed and a wildflower and got their way by 1959. But just to add to that the State also selected an official wildflower soon thereafter and that is the oak-leaf hydrangea.

Alaska’s choice was rooted in its history almost a hundred years ago. The early settlers who formed a lodge called the Grand Igloo selected the diminutive for-get-me-not. In 1913 this was brought into legislation through the use of a poem and finally this was passed into law by 1959 as the official flower and floral emblem of the 49th state.

As far back as 1863, Arizona already had the giant cactus on their state seal. Although the seal underwent numerous versions over the years the floral bloom of the giant cactus was eventually chosen in 1901. Officially it is called the Saguaro Cactus Blossom.

Arkansas on the other hand refers the Apple Blossom as the state’s floral emblem. This went through a tumultuous affair as choice was quite a battle between two Women’s Club’s with the Passion Flower losing the affair.

California as one of the more famous of the 50 states chose between 3 candidates in the 1890’s. These were the the California poppy (Eschscholzia), the Mariposa lily (Calochortus) and the Matilija poppy (Romneya coulteri). It took over 13 years for this to translated into law but still the California Poppy stood tall and is now regarding as the State’s best representative.

14,472 votes of school children made the Rocky Mountain Columbine, officially known as the White and Lavender Columbine, as Colorado’s choice. Quite fond of their natural resources, citizens enacted a law to protect this resource in 1929.

Connecticut, which is another mountainous area, adopted the Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) as its official flower in 1907 right after approving the state seal and flag.

The first step to approach bouquet arrangement is, in believing that this can be done by either man or woman. This task is definitely not gender specific. There are many kinds of flowers, fillers, colors, and covering materials to choose from in building a bouquet, so just like any other skill, all it requires is some practice.

Floristry or floral arrangements is a large topic, so our focus will only be in the basics of creation of acceptable floral bouquets. The topic itself of bouquets is mostly associated with weddings. It is the primary icon that is top of mind in western society. Being the best showcase for most styles of bouquets, it would be best to mention the commonly used types of bouquets according to http://weddings.weddingchannel.com/wedding-planning-ideas/wedding-flowers/qa/what-are-the-different-bouquet-styles.aspx, which are the following:

Arm or Presentation Bouquet: Also commonly used in pageants, awards and competitions usually using long stemmed flowers such as roses and calla lilies, and is arranged to be “cradled” by the arm. Imagine it running through an arm’s length, leaning perpendicularly chest high on the individual while still allowing a free hand for a congratulatory shake. Depending on the actual choice of flowers used, it can be complimented with other fillers or left pure for simplicity. It is traditional fastened with a striking ribbon whether by hand or braided. The simplest kind can even use a minimum of six roses.

Biedermeier: http://www.yourdictionary.com relates to the origin of this style to a 19th century German style of furniture design which is solid, comfortable and simple making it a very popular choice for today’s modern weddings. This is a very compact arrangement using flower bulbs with very uniform sizes – arranged in tight concentric circle from the center outward. From the top it is viewed like a target and from the side looks like a Top. Accents are hardly used, sometimes using two or more colors as an option. This uses most floral tape, some ribbons and some wires to give the handle a tight, rigid grip.

Cascade or Teardrop: The third most popular bouquet of choice is a very eloquently flowing design. It’s a top-heavy arrangement that has the flowers tendrils drooping towards the ground. This uses a full armament of fillers and accents that gives a very royal and opulent atmosphere to the occasion.

The next 5 types are not so frequently used but may serve as a unique flavor to very progressive wedding decorators or arrangers.

Throw Bouquet: it’s actually a scaled down version of the bridal bouquet which is really designed to be easily thrown at the single ladies in the audience.

Nosegay: a smaller version of the Biedermeier that uses similar flowers that are also tightly wrapped with ribbon or floral tape.

Pomander: This is best partnered if the bearer intends to wear gloves. It’s a hanging ball of flowers slipped on the wrist via a ribbon. The ball effect is created by fixing the stems on a Styrofoam type floral aid.

Tussy-Mussy or Hand-Tied: This is a very natural concept, loosely tied together with a sparse mix of blossoms falling usually to a cone-shaped design.

Finally, the Composite: The most unusual bouquet concept that intends the creation of a giant customized flower using other flower parts.

In describing the styles above, we have mentioned the most important materials in making a bouquet. http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-arrange-flowers6.htm aptly describes bouquets as large corsages. Remember those things you gave or received from your date during prom? Girls either had to wear it on your wrist or pin them on their dress. It was usually made up of a single large bulb flower with minimal accents or a dainty orchid arrangement.

The five things you must have with you at all times would be floral tape, chicken wire, ribbons, and sharp scissors. For a sturdy arrangement, first try using long stemmed blossoms. Wrap some wire along the stem to give it more support and give you the ability to bend them into shape later on. Don’t forget to trim the ends.

Arrange the stems and the desired fillers on a clean table and without disturbing the arrangement above, clasp them together at least one hands length from the bottom to make a handle of sorts. It doesn’t have to be too wide as women generally have smaller hands. While holding together, look at the set from the sides and above if they are symmetrical and balanced, if so tie them together from where you hold them with wire and floral tape. Make sure it’s tight and trim the ends again to prevent any pricking.

Take the ribbon and cut three times the length of the desired bow. Do not depend on the bow to keep the arrangement together that is why we use the floral tape and wire. There’s an entire art into making ribbons, but for starters go for the shoelace version and just extend the ends for a drooping effect.

That’s basically it, with a lot of practice and experiments on other materials you can try doing the other styles mentioned here even from the luxury of your home. Cheers!

Sprinkler head adjustment may be required in the event of a water shortage. By adjusting the heads of their sprinkler system, homeowners can stop wasting water and at the same time, more efficiently water their lawn and landscaping area. Note that adjustment is not necessarily the same thing as repair. When you adjust sprinkler heads, you are altering the regular course of the sprinklers. To start with, determine the coverage that the sprinkler heads get at ordinary water pressure.

If you want more power, then you could open up the water line full throttle which will give you the highest water pressure. This can result in over-watering, however, not to mention an absence of water in other areas. Understand that sprinkler heads are created to spray in a particular pattern. Traditionally, homeowners install forty-five degree heads near the corners, fifty-degree heads on the lengths, and three hundred and sixty-degree heads in the center. When they spray in combination it produces a perfect “arching” effect. Regardless of adjustment, it is important these patterns meet each other right at the edge, but not overlap. Why? Because overlapping causes over-watering.

How can you see to proper sprinkler head adjustment? Your first option would be to adjust water pressure from the water source. You could choose to expand the range or alter the length of the spray. You could adjust the water pressure at the sprinkler heads directly. You could even use an automated timing device to adjust the pressure and length of the cycle.

When performing sprinkler head adjustment, reposition the heads at proper aiming positions and make sure they are a correct distance from one another. You may have to measure the distance to be precise. You also have to make sure that no trees, shrubs or foliage is getting in the way of the spray. This will compromise the full effect of the system.

When looking into sprinkler head adjustment for pop up sprinklers (the most common type of system) you must manually pull the pop-up out of each head and then find the black tip on the end of the nozzle. Then, you can turn the tip in a counterclockwise fashion in order to increase the angle. You move it clockwise to reverse the angle back to its original position. If the adjustment requires more manual positioning, then you have to find the screw on the top of the nozzle and turn it counterclockwise or clockwise for the same effect.

Sprinkler head adjustment for a “rain bird” sprinkler is slightly different. This irrigation style sprinkler head system has several subsets and several spray head choices that can be adjusted for height, spread and pressure. This sprinkler head adjustment can be made by turning off the water, pinching the sprinkler head manually, and then twisting the outer plastic spray head to either the left or right. This will change the direction of the stream. You can also use a screwdriver to adjust the direction and pressure. The screw is located on the top of the spray head. You simply loosen the screw and then twist it.

Before making some adjustments, always sketch your yard (as a blueprint) and take precise measurements to avoid problems with inaccurate or overlapping streams.

Give your house a bit of traditional flair with exterior wooden shutters. Wood shutters come in a wide variety of styles and patterns, and are very easily customizable. Whether you’re looking for a way to make your house simply look better or to prevent the extremes of summer and winter to enter your house, shutters offer a large number of both practical and aesthetic benefits. Shutters can be classified into being either operable (meaning they can open and close) or decorative. Operable shutters can offer significant practical advantages to a homeowner.

Practical Benefits

By choosing a high-quality, solid wooden such as Cedar or Mahogany, you’ll see a number of real benefits. Custom shutters made from single-cuts from these types of wooden reduce the number of issues you could see in lesser woods like wooden-cracks which could result in house air leaking outside. By strictly using top-grade woods, which aren’t as prone to having leaking/cracking problems, you will be able to save on utility costs. A pair of custom open/close shutters can also be great help in battling climates.

During the summer, they can be closed to keep cool air in, as well as give you and your house’s furniture/carpet protection from the sun. In the winter, the shutters can also be closed to help prevent any warm air from seeping out, as well as keep the cold air from coming in. In addition to keeping normal climate changes outside, the right pair of shutters can prevent dangerous climates such as hurricanes from damaging you or your windows. Operable, Bermuda-style shutters, which were designed specifically for hurricane-climates, are perfect for homeowners in coastal, stormy regions like Florida. Depending on the type of lumber used, wooden shutters are also very adaptable.

The more high-grade woods that have either FAS, 2FAS or CLEAR qualifications such as teak, cedar, poplar, or oak are all very long lasting due to their quality. These various woods can help serve different purposes depending on the weather conditions the shutters will be in, with an example being Spanish Cedar. This is one of the more durable woods that can be used, as it is not only naturally rot resistant, but also resistant to insects such as termites, fungus and moisture, giving it the most flexible of qualities compared to most woods used for exterior shutters.

Aesthetic Benefits

Wooden shutters not only are long-lasting and help you save on costs; they also can be the perfect added touch to any house. The windows of a home can be easily overlooked when thinking of ways to spruce up a house’s image, but a simple, quick add-on like a shutter can make all the difference. Whether you’re looking for a sophisticated, antique feel, a classic, colonial American look or something completely different altogether, the type of wooden shutter you get will depend on the type of architecture your house is based on.
Shutters in general can help a house look better, but wooden shutters in particular can really set a property apart.

Customizing Your Shutters

Exterior wooden shutters might not be something that’s crossed your mind before, but by selecting the appropriate style and pattern, they can be a wonderful external house addition. For keeping a house cool and airing it out in the summer, a pair of Louvered shutters can be ideal. A Bermuda-type is best for hurricane areas, and a Board-and-Batten style is good for sun protection. All different types have their pros and cons, but as long as a solid hardwood is selected, your shutter will not suffer from rot or cracks regardless.

To start out the customization process, you can choose from the type of wooden you want used. The best choices are woods such as Spanish Cedar, Mahogany and Oak. Next, you will need to choose the type of shutter you want, such as louvered, board-and-batten, flat panel or Bermuda. From there, you can decide on the type of style you want. A good shutter company usually gives you a select number of patterns to choose from, but if you’re creative you can create a completely unique design. Even if you’re not looking to make an original pattern, you can still be creative when it comes to color. You can have your wooden finished for you, painted yourself, or left unpainted.

Exterior wooden shutters are a great add-on to a home, and are something that can only increase a house’s value over time.

Estate Millwork is an expert when it comes to exterior wooden shutters. Estate workers can create pre-made or custom wooden shutters, so visit our website today to receive a price quote on a beautiful pair of wooden shutters.

Flowers send a powerful message for a variety of occasions. People have given flowers for any occasion from weddings to birthdays, get well soon or just to brighten a day. The purveyors of these intimate gifts are florists. There are online florists, and those who sell flowers locally, some with specific areas of expertise and others with a wide knowledge. Choosing one can be an overwhelming task, so here are a few guidelines to make the process a bit easier to tell a good florist from an average florist.

Before you choose a florist, ask yourself what occasion you need flowers for? If the flowers are to be delivered cross country or even just out of town, online florists specialize in these occasions. Choosing an online florist is a bit easier than brick and mortar with so many places that review other websites these days. Reviews can be read carefully, giving a strong understanding of the regular business practices of the florist. They generally have a freephone number to call for more information as well. Customer service is a very high priority to these florists, as they cannot be there face to face, and the quality of the flowers is taken on faith.

If you are a more tactile person, perhaps you are interested in buying flowers locally. Perhaps this is a major occasion purchase, such as a wedding. Many people, when making a large purchase, still like to talk to a friendly face. Local brick and mortar florists specialize in being personal. A good florist will ask for pictures and details about the occasion. In the case of a wedding for instance, what corsage will the bride wear, what color are the bridesmaid dresses, etc. A good florist will also ask for pictures of where the wedding will be held, and what decorations will be there.

If the florist is really worth their salt, they will present several ideas on flowers for any occasion. The florist should present options, not sell you on their personal favorite idea, making the experience of choosing flowers a choice not an argument. Good florists will explain the costs of flowers as well, understanding most people do not understand the costs of floral arrangements for special occasions and work within your budget.

Remember to choose the florist you like best, one who works well with you. The occasion is ultimately yours and not matter the advice friends or family give. It is your occasion to celebrate.

At one time or another, all sprinkler systems will be in need of maintenance. The following are some helpful tips on fixing and maintaining your underground sprinkler heads and also some general maintenance on how to keep your system running smoothly.

One common problem is when the sprinkler system will stop turning on. Your first step in this scenario would be to check your rain sensor if you have one. If the sensor is on and is being obstructed, it may keep your sprinklers from functioning. From there, you need to make sure your controller has power. Something as simple as resetting the power, or checking for a loose wire, might quickly fix the problem.

Sprinkler heads that pop up from the ground can face a lot of issues and will probably be the part of your sprinkler system you fix most often. All heads will need to be fixed and replaced at some point. They can get stuck in the up position or in the down position. They can crack during the winter months, or get run over by a lawn mower. To check or replace underground sprinkler heads, you need to start by digging about five inches all the way around the head with a shovel. Remember not to puncture the surrounding water lines! If you dig too deep, you may end up causing more damage and leave more things in need of repair.

The next step in fixing underground sprinkler heads is to remove the nonworking head by unscrewing it from the connecting pipe. Do your best not to get dirt into the pipe as you don’t want further trouble in the form of clogs. You can cover the hole with a clean cloth in the mean time if you prefer. From there, you head to the store to buy a new same size sprinkler head. With the sprinkler head in hand, you head back to your pipe (remembering to remove the cloth if you used one) and screw the new head on tight. Make sure you adjust the new sprinkler head so that it is spraying onto your lawn and not watering your sidewalk. You add the dirt you removed earlier back into the hole, packing it tightly around the head. You then flip the switch, stand back, and watch the water fly. Tada! You just fixed the underground sprinkler heads all by yourself, you handyman (or handywoman) you!

What are you suppose to do if one section of your sprinklers will not shut off? Start by turning off the water at the source. You don’t want to have a river flowing through your lawn! You will then check for any loose wires or anything that appears to be broken on your system. Check the sprinkler solenoid, which is the top of the valve by unscrewing it to look for debris. Check to be sure the plunger does not need to be readjusted. Clean all parts including the diaphragm. It is often something as small as a clog.

From underground sprinkler heads to clogged rain sensors, keeping your sprinkler system maintained is not as difficult as it seems.

A Springtail or Collembola issue came up recently. A Phoenix pest control customer with a severe case of springtails contacted me and went to her home to make a comprehensive inspection to see if we can alleviate the problem.

Adults and immature Springtails are generally 1/16th to 1/8th inch long and are gray or brown in color. They may be distinguished from other tiny insects because they have a projection or “tail” which they lock under their abdomen and release to “spring.” Springtails need high moisture in order to survive. Occasionally they build up in high numbers during wet years in irrigated areas. When this area dries up, they are attracted to the lights and moisture in yards, and may become severe nuisances in interiors.

As I always do, I like to prepare myself, before I go out on the inspection, so I pulled up information on the internet and found that I probably have better information than what I found available on the internet.

I like to look at Educational sites from entomology departments and cooperative extensions around the country because generally they have very good information produced by experts who study pests. However, I was surprised that I found a lot of out dated information that included advice on treatment with products that are no longer available or pulled from the market, as well as the home remedy advice that while simple may provide some temporary relief, such as a mixture of dishwashing liquid, vinegar or lemon juice to kill the pests in a environmentally friendly way. But there was little to no advice on getting to the source of the problem and much of the information was about exterior problems with springtails and a very limited amount of information on the interior of properties.

Based on the phone calls we receive at Invader Pest Management, it’s the problems on the inside of the house that get the phone’s ringing. People get frustrated with springtails because they are inside and everywhere!

So, let’s get to looking at this springtail issue: first of all whether inside or outside, springtails are a direct result of excessive moisture. So the first thing that I look for or a homeowner should look for is moisture. Of course, springtails are an introduced pest that could be brought into a home via potted plants, or a crack in the foundation, through open windows or exhaust fans and the infestation could and most certainly started outside. However, in most cases the customer is calling about the little bugs everywhere inside, in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, etc… are you seeing a pattern here? Moisture areas, right? They almost always say they see them in the sinks or around the drains.

The answer to the first question we always get is NO. No we can’t spray pesticides down the drain! Now that being said, along with scrubbing drain pipes, we do have environmentally and pipe friendly bio-remediation products that we can utilize in drains and they have been found to help reduce springtail problems by eating the buildup of fungus, mildew and mold. However we have had some cases where that wasn’t enough, and generally we have found there to be other moisture problems than just the drains.

Springtails thrive in humid areas and so does their food source. Springtails eat molds, mildews and fungus than can develop in areas that retain moisture content. Unfortunately, many of these potential sites can go unseen for a long time, and the problem gets worse even though the customer has tried everything, even numerous pest control companies in some cases.

I know that in Phoenix, Arizona we joke that, “it’s a dry heat”, so why would there be such a humidity issue? Well, that all depends, but some simple factors are, irrigation leaks not being fixed, sprinklers systems spraying to close or on the house, leaf litter and debris under bushes and shrubs holding moisture to ground, vines and trees growing on or to close to the structure, rain gutters clogged with debris, potted plants with drip irrigation with no catch basins, etc… all these items and more could be creating a moisture problem around your structure which could be the perfect breeding zone for springtails. On the inside, pipe leaks, floor drains not properly draining, cracks in tiled showers/tubs allow seepage inside walls, and simple sweat on the bottom of a tub from temperature difference of hot water in tub and cool air under it could keep it damp under the tub.

Anyway, lots of stuff here, and I hope that you see that when it comes to controlling springtails, it’s all about controlling the humidity and the food sources. Yes, there are some pest control options however the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) options such as inspection, sanitation, moisture control, mechanical repairs to moisture issues are much more likely to solve the problem than simply trying to spray away the pest.

If you find that you have all these tiny bugs around your sinks, drains, tubs, showers and you are tired of having to live with them, call Invader Pest Management at 623-435-0228 and we will be happy to put together an Invader IPM Program that will solve your pest problem, reduce the pesticides utilized around your properties, and guarantee you peace of mind, at least when it comes to Pests!!!

A beautiful garden can be a sight to behold even for someone who is not a fan of flora. And for those who may want to sit in the garden and let the experience sink in, outdoor garden furniture becomes as important as the ones inside the house. The colour and style of the furniture can be chosen to complement that of the house.

Having a beautiful garden means one can spend a lot of time relaxing and enjoying in a variety of furniture like garden recliners, parasols, popup gazebos or even simple garden benches. Adding anything different, for example, conservatory chairs adds to the variety of the garden. Some prefer having garden barbeques that can make it possible for family and friends to enjoy the garden space at the same time grilling a fresh steak.

There are no rules to selecting your garden furniture but some things need to be kept in mind while doing so. Great designs are available for garden furniture, but it is important to visualize your garden or patio when making the choice of your garden furniture. Also important is to keep in mind what material the furniture would be in. If you are buying garden recliners, garden benches or even conservatory chairs, you need to be sure that they can withstand the weather outside if you live in a place of harsh winter or heat. Conservatory chairs are those chairs that one sees with curvy frames made of wood and which sometimes can be even entirely handcrafted. There are numerous gazebo designs in the marketplace but it is important to note that popup gazebos with sides are a great choice simply because they are so versatile and can offer the same benefits as the four legged gazebos but with the extra usability in conditions that may not be perfect. Popup gazebos are usually fixed to main structures using zips or even Velcro. Garden recliners, when fully reclined can have you looking at the sky and waking up some time later wondering how long you have been out for. You must ensure that the headrest must be smooth and adjustable enough to be in a position comfortable for you.

Gas barbeques are perhaps the best solution to spending time outdoors with friends and family in warmer months. They can be positioned at a suitable level with wooden decks or planks. Garden benches, on the other hand are those furniture that can even be built by hand. Depending on where you reside, they can be made in different types of material like wrought-iron or steel. They are made to better withstand harsh weather and are better than wood benches as they do not decay easily. These benches can also be designed in various styles and forms as they are cast in the metal they are built in. A garden parasol is a canopy designed to protect from rain or sunlight and is usually fixed to a patio table or such other garden furniture.
