Radon In Your Home Could Be A Real Danger

The presence of radon in the living areas depends on many parameters related to soil (soil concentration, permeability and soil moisture, cracks or fractures in the underlying rock), housing (construction method, cracking of the surface in contact with soil, ventilation …) in outdoor air, building materials (concrete alum shale, granite rock, …), water for domestic use including when it from groundwater located in granitic terrain. In some cases, the degassing of water in buildings can be a significant source (eg spas …). In short, building, place relatively confined and whose seal with the ground is more or less effective, can be a trap for radon.  There are a number of things you ought to know about getting rid of radon gas from your house.

The risk in the event of exposure varies depending on the amount of this gas in the air. Its prevalence varies by geographic area in which you are located. As such, a map prepared by the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), with the assistance of Departmental Directorates of Health and Social Affairs (DDASS) identify areas of exposure to radon in homes. In hex, 300,000 homes were affected and 27 departments are variously exposed. Thus, the Auvergne and the South Corsica are the areas most affected.

The concentration of radon in a building depends not only geological and climatic factors but also the design of buildings and our lifestyles. Thus we observed higher concentrations in winter than in summer and changes during the day in particular to the opening of doors and windows. The measurement of radon concentration is performed using a dosimeter. It records the radioactive decay of radon atoms. From a low cost, this measure should be performed in living rooms on a minimum of 2 months. And the unit of measurement of radon concentration in air is Bq/m3 (Becquerel per cubic meter). The alert threshold is from 1.000 Bq/m3 (in annual average concentration). But from 400 Bq/m3, precautionary measures should be taken.
